The European diesel fuel specification limits the biodiesel content to 7 %. It is, however, desirable to increase the amount of renewables in the transport sector; therefore blending with a higher biogenic fuel content is of interest. Blending of fuels can lead to chemical reactions between fuel components and may result in undesired products. In detail, aged biodiesel from unsaturated FAME and fossil diesel fuels can form oligomers and precipitations with a maximum in the range of B10 to B20. Precursors are oligomers that can be separated from the biodiesel or the blends in an amount of up to 20 %. These oligomers seem to have potency for chemical reactions with fuel components or the engine oil. To prevent tentative problems in the fuel filter, the... |

The relative abundance of almond seed in several tropical regions of the world coupled with the little knowledge of its utilization in vegetable oil production prompted the need for this review. The aim is to review almond oil expression through different extraction/expression approach, the economic and health benefits of almond oil, and the challenges and prospects of almond oil extraction in Nigeria. This review covers the recent significant materials found in the literature on almond seed and oil extraction/expression. Almond oil is an essential oil packed with a lot of nutrients that are beneficial to human health. Therefore, it is important to devise better approach for maximum oil extraction/ expression. |

Biomass furnace ash (BFA) generated from drying of grains in mechanical dryers were blended with cement in varying ratio of 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7 and 1:8 by volume. Each composition was cured in an ambient condition for 7, 14 and 28 days and determined their properties such as density, porosity, compressive strength and thermal shock resistance. Cold crushing strength increased with increasing cement content and curing time. Likewise, density increased with increasing cement content and curing time while porosity showed the other way. All the sample compositions exceeded 30 cycles without any crack when subjected to thermal shock resistant cycles of heating and cooling using a firing temperature of 1000oC in an electric muffle furnace. |

Agriculture plays a vital role in socio-economic development of India. Agriculture is the cultivation of plants for food, fiber, biofuel, medicinals and other products used to sustain and enhance human life. Agriculture is the most essential and foremost economic activity of all times. Until the Industrial Revolution, the vast majority of the human population labored in agriculture. Pre-industrial agriculture was typically subsistence agriculture/self-sufficiency in which farmers raised most of their crops for their own consumption instead of cash crops for trade. But now, agriculture is undergoing a structural change leading to a crisis situation. The rate of growth of agricultural output is gradually declining in the recent years due to labor scarcity... |

Optical seed mass flow sensors are widely used on seed drills and planters. An important challenge in these sensors is their malfunction in a dusty condition. Dust caused by soil and seeds may sit on the light elements and disrupt its function. In this study, an approach was developed to compensate this effect. A non-contact intelligent system with infrared diodes and a microcontroller with ARM architecture was built up to monitor the seed flow in the delivery tube of seed drills. At the hardware phase, a glass with a different radius of curvature was installed in front of the elements. The semi-cylindrical glass placement in front of the optical elements meant that the arrangement was sealed against dust. Besides, the fall of the seeds tangential to the... |

Tractor operated implements are attached to the tractor at its rear side. Regular monitoring of these working implements working is not easy as envisaged by others who are not tractor operators. The tractor operator needs to adopt uncomfortable posture as well turns his neck backward for monitoring of the working implements which results in muscular pain and fatigue of the tractor operator. As a solution to this issue, a camera based rear mounted implement monitoring system was developed and evaluated. Drudgery reduction which form part of the performance indices was analyzed in terms of heart rate and SpO2 level. Test results of the study revealed that there was a significant difference in heart rate as well as SpO2 level measured with and without the... |

Spray drift is defined as the movement of small spray droplets as particles or vapour at the time of application or soon thereafter out of the target zone by the action of air or incorrect nozzle mounted on boom. Several factors are known to affect spray drift with significant differences such as physical parameters, technological parameters, and meteorological parameters. The mitigation of spray drift from agricultural application is an important issue that concerns many researchers and authors working with field tests. Wind tunnel technique is considered as an alternative method to assess spray drift that move away from the target site intended under different settings as boom heights and wind speeds. In 2015, IRSTEA Montpellier wind tunnel was fitted... |

Fruit sorting determines market value. Farmers and traders commonly use physical-eye inspection and handpicking for sorting, but this is labour-intensive and ineffective. This research work aims to develop a sensor-based automated system for sorting freshly harvested tomato fruits. The automated system sorts tomato fruits into small, medium, and big sizes for market value. To evaluate the system performance, 115 fruits were machine-sorted and compared to eye-inspection and physical measurement. Physical measurement was done by measuring the minor, intermediate, and major diameters of each fruit with a Vernier calliper. While the eye-inspection was carried out by manual human examination with the eye. Results show average percentage error between physical... |

Eleven simulation models were developed to plan and design several dairy farm facilities. Subsequently, an electronic spark map (decision tree) was developed for each simulation model, and then the simulation models were integrated into the relevant spark maps. Afterwards, C# language (C Sharp), which is an object-oriented programming language, was used to develop an expert system via the simulation models and the electronic spark maps. The developed expert system is able to plan and design several dairy farm facilities, e.g. housing system (corrals system), shade structure and roof material, concrete base, cooling system, milking parlour, forage storage, and manure handling system. Subsequently, it plans the farmstead layout, and it leads to implement... |

Liquid levels are measured in a variety of agricultural applications, and are often measured manually, which can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Rapid advances in electronic technologies have made a variety of inexpensive sensing, monitoring, and control capabilities available. A monitoring system was developed and evaluated for automatic measurement of liquid levels, and demonstrated by monitoring water levels in evaporation pans used in evaporation studies and irrigation scheduling. The system is composed of an ultrasonic sensor, a microcontroller-based data logger, and a temperature sensor. The ultrasonic sensor measures the distance from the sensor to the liquid surface. Air temperature is measured by the temperature sensor, and is used to... |

Nigeria’s agriculture requires a very strong boost because of increasing population and decreasing land resources due to environmental factors. This paper discussed the dynamics of agriculture and the important role of mechanization in providing the needed boost. The national agricultural policies and their impact on Nigeria’s agriculture were highlighted emphasizing the previous and present roles of various organs of the government. After discussing the assets and liabilities of Nigeria’s agriculture, the paper posits that the agricultural environment must be properly managed for sustainable agricultural productivity in view of emerging information technology. The future expectations and challenges facing the Nigerian agricultural engineers,... |
